An approach to avoiding rank reversal in AHP
نویسندگان
چکیده
Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been considerably criticized for possible rank reversal phenomenon caused by the addition or deletion of an alternative. This paper looks into the cause of rank reversal phenomenon and finds that rank reversal is caused by change of local priorities before and after an alternative is added or deleted. An approach is therefore proposed to keep the local priorities unchanged to avoid rank reversal phenomenon. Two well-known numerical examples are re-examined using the proposed approach to demonstrate its validity and practicability in rank preservation. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Comparison of the REMBRANDT System with a New Approach in AHP
Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been criticized considerably for possible rank reversal phenomenon caused by the addition or deletion of an alternative. While in many cases this is a perfectly valid phenomenon, there are also many cases where ranks should be preserved. Our findings indicate that using the geometric mean reduces the variance in ratings substantially; hence, yielding lower i...
متن کاملA Critical Review of Popular Multi-criteria Decision Making Methodlogies
Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a powerful quantitative measurement method in the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) area. It has been used in banks, manufacturing systems, organizational performance evaluation, and project selection. Despite this widespread usage, many studies argue that rank reversal phenomenon is unpreventable when any AHP method is applied. This paper presents that t...
متن کاملA Correct Approach on Adding Criteria in the Analytic Hierarchy Process
This paper deals with addition besides deletion of indifferent or wash criteria on which the alternatives have equal performance in the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) against the misguided argument as shortcoming of the AHP. In such case, it is noted that careful attention and a correct approach are required in order not to be led towards a wrong decision with rank reversal when composing pri...
متن کاملAnother Potential Strong Shortcoming of Ahp
In the last twenty years many features of Saaty's Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) have been criticised, especially the additive hierarchical composition of conventional AHP, which leads to the possibility of occurrence of the Rank Reversal phenomenon (adding an irrelevant alternative may cause a reversal in the ranking at the top). In the context of a variable number of alternatives this ran...
متن کاملEvaluative Criteria for Aggregation Rules in the Analytic Hierarchy Process
The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been considerably criticized for its possible rank reversal phenomenon. Many variants of the original AHP have been proposed to preserve rank orders. The validity of the original AHP and its variants have been a subject of long-lasting debate. In this paper we propose four criteria to evaluate the validity of AHP aggregation rules and examine three typic...
